New York Allocates $300M for Hospital Cybersecurity and IT Improvements

Post Summary

New York State has committed more than $300 million in funding to bolster the technology infrastructure of 22 hospitals across the state, focusing on cybersecurity, IT modernization, telehealth expansion, and other digital health initiatives. The funding is part of the ongoing Statewide Health Care Facility Transformation Program, which aims to address healthcare disparities and improve access to quality care.

Supporting Struggling Providers with Modernized Systems

The $309,047,122 in funding, announced by New York Governor Kathy Hochul, is targeted at financially distressed healthcare providers. These investments are intended to strengthen hospital systems by improving electronic health records (EHR), cybersecurity measures, and telehealth services.

"By modernizing our hospitals' IT infrastructure and protecting patients' information, we're strengthening the foundation of health care in New York State", said Hochul. "These investments will help ensure that hospitals have the tools they need to safeguard patient data, expand telehealth services and deliver a healthier future for all New Yorkers."

Hospitals receiving the largest share of funds are focused on advancing EHR capabilities, with $195,127,664 being distributed among ten institutions. Richmond Medical Center led this category with $54,098,779 for EHR upgrades, while other recipients included Blythedale Children's Hospital, Rome Memorial Hospital, and The Brooklyn Hospital Center, among others.

Cybersecurity Takes Center Stage

With cyber threats posing significant risks to the healthcare sector, the program earmarked $101.7 million specifically for cybersecurity enhancements. Eight hospitals, including Montefiore Health System and Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, received funding for upgrades in this critical area. Montefiore secured the highest award for cybersecurity at $41.475 million, while Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center was allocated $530,000.

"With these investments, we are focused on developing safe, reliable and connected patient-centered care", said Dr. James McDonald, commissioner of the New York Department of Health. "By expanding data capabilities and improving cybersecurity defenses, we’re enhancing clinical decision making across the state’s healthcare network."

Expansion of Telehealth Services

The state also allocated nearly $5.28 million to four hospitals for telehealth initiatives aimed at improving remote care access for New Yorkers. SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse received the largest portion, with $2.43 million awarded for telehealth projects, joined by Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital Medical Center, Columbia Memorial Hospital, and United Health Services Hospitals.

Broader Commitment to Healthcare Transformation

Since 2016, New York State has directed more than $4.7 billion in healthcare capital funding, underscoring its commitment to improving healthcare access and equity. This year’s funding also complements earlier investments in hospital modernization under the Healthcare Safety Net Transformation Program, which included $188 million for EHR integrations, emergency department upgrades, neonatal intensive care units, and other digital health improvements.

"Every person should have access to affordable, reliable healthcare regardless of the ZIP code they live in, and these investments will bring vital resources to underserved New Yorkers", Hochul emphasized.

Looking Ahead

The latest funding allocation highlights New York’s focus on creating a resilient, technologically advanced healthcare infrastructure. From enhancing cybersecurity systems to expanding telehealth services, these investments aim to ensure that hospitals are equipped not only to meet the challenges of today but to secure a healthier future for communities across the state.
